How can Social Media Help in Your Job Search

Social-Media

Social Media has become an integral part of our lives. If we do not check our phone for one hour, we become very restless. It has become so much important for human beings now that one new word “Nomophobia” has been added to the dictionaries. We are becoming addicted to social media for every single thing and it is making us mentally dependent. We have seen in the Hollywood movies that one day robots will take over the world. If it happens, it will ruin the earth. Wait! Wait! Don’t get scared, we are not trying to make you afraid of the internet by saying this! In this world, everything has it’s own pros and cons. One side social media truly kills our productive time and on the other hand, it can be immensely fruitful for your next job search. Let’s discuss how:

There are many social media websites getting popular on the internet. I would like to say that Facebook is the king of social media websites. However, LinkedIn is considered the best for job searching. Let’s go to step by step to reap the benefits of these websites.

LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com)

Linkedin is a business-oriented social network place where many working professionals connect socially with one another. This is a platform that can give you the largest opportunity to showcase your work experience, skills, education etc. Gone are the days, when the applicants use to bring a printed resume for a job, today everybody gives his LinkedIn ID and it is super cool. Here are a few tips to make a robust profile on LinkedIN :

  • Always have an updated profile with the current company details.
  • Use a professional profile picture. Avoid using casual profile photos. There is difference between Facebook and LinkedIN.
  • Grow your LinkedIn network. Connect with your college alumni, previous managers, and colleagues. Whenever you are sending a request to make a new connection, always mention how do you know each other. Try to add at least one person every week.
  • Request recommendations from previous managers and co-workers. Ask them to write a positive feedback about you on your profile. If you get it organically, nothing is better than that.
  • Follow companies and industries in which you are interested.
  • Approach your dream company, its managers, and recruiters and tell them that how you can benefit their organization with your skills. I have seen many of my friends who have got recruited in companies like KPMG, Infosys, and Accenture via their strong Linkedin profile.

We all know that Twitter is a micro-blogging website and it allows its user to write a 280 characters message about the trending topic. Very few people know that Twitter is more powerful than Linkedin for job search. Let me tell you a small incidence that happened in my previous company, it will surely make you analyze the true worth of Twitter in career growth perspective. My previous company deals with cloud-based communication services. Unfortunately, the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authorities of India) had stopped its services for some reason. It affected the business of the company like a nightmare. The company began a campaign on Twitter and asked all employees to use a particular hashtag and tweet about it. At the same time, one person who was interested to be a part of the company for years used his Twitter account as a powerful tool and wrote several tweets that why the TRY should release the services. Those tweets came into the spotlight. These were liked not only by the HR and managers but also our CEO was impressed. The CEO personally talked to that person and hired him on a high package. It happened because the person had a good experience in the same industry. I am sure, you would have understood the potential of Twitter by now.

Every company runs online quiz on occasions like Foundation day, Annual Day, New Year on Twitter to be popular among the internet. Anybody can participate in those small games and can make a company notice you.

Facebook is considered a bit less professional in its comparison with LinkedIN and Twitter. The reason is, people love to share their personal lives there. However, one needs to maintain one’s facebook profile competent enough for job search. Nowadays, recruiters and HRs have become smarter and you will be amazed to know that they check your facebook profile before hiring you. Yes, it’s true. Many HR professionals have accepted this in interviews. It helps them analyze what kind of a person you are in your personal life. No, they do not want to peep into your personal life, but yes, it gives them an idea about you.
