I do not Love You – A Short Story

not-love-you

Anika was a beautiful, demure, and shy girl. Her fiance, Rohit, had become her everything just in a few months. She never had any dalliance or love flings during her teenage. The first boy she loved was Rohit. Rohit was also handsome, but an egoistic person. Both were about to get married just the next month. While Rohit had a job in the US, Anika had applied for her further studies in the US.

And the wedding happened with great pomp and show. She was the only girl child and her parents invested everything they had been saving for their lovely child. The new bride entered her new house. Her mother-in-law was a very kind lady and she loved Anika as her own daughter. After their honeymoon period, they both shifted to abroad as per their set plan.

They were in a new country; Anika was so excited. Their weekends were not less than a new honeymoon for them. Their story blossomed like a fairytale. One fateful day, Rohit lost his job abroad. In the beginning, there were no financial problems. Rohit did not take any concern and considered it a normal situation. But Anika started spending frugally. Rohit urged her to go out on weekends, she denied. Rohit began having a fight with her and called names for her monotonous life. Anika wanted to go out, but she thought that spending money with no income would become a problem for them.

On the other hand, Rohit was not getting many job options and was not ready to relegate himself to a lower level. Anika tried to make him understand the unforeseen situation, but he was not ready to listen. Rohit’s egoistic nature came between in their beautiful relation.

Soon Anika got a small job and she began earning a little amount, this amount was enough to run a household. On the other hand, Rohit became more egoistic, he was worried about his job. He binged himself on intoxication. Soon he started dating a girl he met in a bar. He was going through the worst phase of his life. He came home and shouted on Anika. He told that he did not want to spend his life with her. Anika listened to everything silently and did not utter a word. This became their daily routine. Rohit’s anger and Anika’s silence became a normal thing. Soon Anika got realized that Rohit had been dating a girl he met in a bar. It was not normal for her. She packed her bag and returned to India. Rohit was happy, as he got rid of a boring girl. In the beginning, he came late nights home and wine was the only thing in his life.

On the other hand, Anika did not discuss these issues with anybody. Not even with her mother or mother-in-law. She pretended that she wanted some documents, so she came home. After one or two weeks, the silence of the house started torturing Rohit. He wanted to talk, laugh and feel the life. But, nobody was there. The single person who cared for him had gone.

Rohit became serious for his job now. He took an opportunity which was a bit lower for him. But he accepted that and began working over there. Every time his eyes were kept on the phone in the wait of a call or message from her dear wife. But Anika did not try to contact him at all. One day, Rohit received a call from his mother if he was coming to Anika’s cousin sister’s wedding.

Rohit packed his bag and came to India without informing Anika. He was thinking about what Anika would say. Would she be excited or angry? Would she forgive me or not? These things were in his mind and he was moving towards Anika’s home. He rang the bell and Anika’s father opened the door. He requested his father to not to tell Anika that Rohit had come. He saw from the window. She was lying on her bed and was watching their honeymoon photographs. Rohit came close to her and whispered in her ears, “Do you love me?” Anika turned back, shocked and upset Anika hugged Rohit tightly and said, “I Don’t Love You.”
